1. Hold Silver Tarnish at Bay
Silver jewelry looks gorgeous but it tarnishes if you don’t wear it regularly. It is actually the other metals (often copper) within silver jewelry that causes the tarnish.
Because these metals react with moisture in the air, you need to keep moisture at bay.
Place pieces of chalk in your jewelry box alongside your silver jewelry. It will soak up any extra moisture before it reacts with your jewelry.
2. Try a Super Quick Cleaner
Line a bowl with aluminum foil. Mix 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and 1 tablespoon of salt with 1 cup of hot water.
This mixture works because of the combination of tinfoil, salt, and bicarbonate of soda.
They create an ion transfer. It’s this chemical exchange that cleans the jewelry.
3. Make a Bath for Your Pearls
Pearls can’t take the same kind of cleaning methods as other jewelry. Protect them by putting them in a knee-high stocking. Nylon is best.
Knot the top of the stockings so they don’t fall out.
Add baby shampoo to a sink of warm water. Add the stocking of pearls and massage the nylon to clean the pearls.
Rinse with clean water and take the pearls out of the stocking. Pat them dry.
You can minimize the amount of cleaning you need to do by putting them on last. Avoid spraying them with hairspray, perfume, and other spritzes.
4. Make Your Own Essential Oils Wash

Start with 1/4 cup of distilled water. Add 1 tablespoon of Thieves household cleaner, 1 tablespoon of witch hazel, and 1 teaspoon of Thieves dish soap.
Mix thoroughly and leave your jewelry to soak for an hour.
Find an old toothbrush and clean any of those hard-to-reach places.
Rinse your jewelry (carefully, you don’t want it falling down the drain) and leave it to dry.
5. Use Gentle Solutions on Costume Jewelry
It’s not always easy to tell what costume jewelry is made of. Use gentle cleaning solutions to avoid damaging your pieces.
You will need a polishing cloth and an old toothbrush for this DIY jewelry cleaner.
Mix 3 drops of lemon oil in 1/3 cup of water. Soak the piece for anywhere between 5 minutes and overnight.
Scrub it with the brush then rinse it. Buff it with the cloth to get the shine back.
