Toenail fungus can be a pain to remove, and there’s always a chance it will come back.
Fungal nail infections can occur for multiple reasons, and it’s hard to pinpoint one cause. Instead of taking over-the-counter and prescription medication, there are several home remedies for toenail fungus that can work just as well.
It’s essential that you treat your toenail fungus immediately, or your doctor may decide to remove your toenail. Follow these steps to rid yourself of the bacteria before it comes to that.
1. Listerine
Listerine and other brands of mouthwash can work the same on your foot as it does in your mouth. The alcohol helps kill bacteria, just as it does when you add it to your oral hygiene regimen.
With Listerine, you’ll need a bit more time for it to take effect. Soak your foot in the liquid for at least 30 minutes each day until the fungus begins to clear.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda isn’t a cure, but it’s one of the home remedies for toenail fungus that will limit the effect and possible spread of the fungus. Baking soda is alkaline based, which works against the acidic properties of the fungus.
Soak your toe in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to get the best effects.
3. Vicks VapoRub
Vicks VapoRub is easy enough to find at your local drug store. You may even have some in your cabinet for cough suppression. The active ingredients in Vicks VapoRub, camphor and eucalyptus oil, are effective at treating toenail fungus.
Scientists have taken a look at Vicks VapoRub and claimed it showed positive effects when treating toenail fungus. Use Vicks VapoRub at least once a day by applying a small amount to the affected toe.
4. A Change in Diet
Diet is the first and most important defense against current and future fungal infections. It’s no secret that our skin is affected by what we eat. If you are experiencing a bout of toenail fungus, you should take a look at what you’re putting into your body that’s adding to the problem.
When fighting toenail fungus, try increasing your protein, iron, and essential fatty acids consumption. Yogurt is a go-to here.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of the most common home remedies for toenail fungus that people use. You use apple cider vinegar as both a topical and internal treatment for the fungus.
Add a one-to-one ratio of Epsom salts and apple cider vinegar to water, and allow your foot to soak for 30 minutes. Keep the water warm, but not so hot that it’s uncomfortable. For best results, soak your foot in this mixture twice daily.
Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus
If the toenail fungus resists these home remedies, you should go to the doctor and seek professional help. Still, if you can treat the infection at home, it’s much easier, cheaper, and sometimes safer than using prescription drugs.
